Barbara Cernic Mali, trained as an Economist, joined the Urban Planning Institute as a researcher in 1986, after completing a Master's degree at the University of New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, in 1985. Her fields of specialisation include: housing studies (housing market, housing renewal and regeneration, housing management) and spatial and economic revitalisation (analyses, strategies, programmes) of cities and/or particular areas. She has participated in different roles in international research projects (OECD Urban Affairs Group, UN projects) and in projects with research institutions from different EU countries. She has organised, co-ordinated and managed several international projects, conferences and events. She has, for example, been a project manager in the EU Phare CBC Programme, Economic and Spatial Regeneration of Jesenice Area, Phase I 1997-1998; Phase II 2000 - 2001, and a Conference co-ordinator of the International Conference "Housing in Transition", Piran, Slovenia (September 1997, 120 participants of which 80 were from abroad)
