Husby is one out of the five large housing estates that have been selected by Stockholm city and the state to take part in the national urban development programme (Storstadssatsningen/The Metropolitan Development Initiative). The reason is its large foreign-born population, which is poorly integrated in terms of labour market participation.

Husby is in many ways well-planned and its residents have good access to the green, and for leisure activities very attractive, Järva Field. Few of our interviewees see the scale and physical structure as a crucial component of the socio-economic decline that the area went through between 1985 and 1995. Large housing estates might be boring or less attractive for many households but Husby is apparantly not among those that face the biggest physical problems.
